Terms and your study load
What is a Term?
A new teaching period called ‘Term’ has been introduced at La Trobe. Terms run throughout the year and are taught over six weeks instead of the usual 12 weeks for Semester 1 and 2. Some terms are taught at the same time as the standard semesters (see our academic calendar for dates).
You can enrol in terms to study flexibly but you still need to keep your overall study load for the whole of a standard year (e.g. the whole of Semester 1 or Semester 2) to no more than 120 credit points as a full-time student (student visa holders included).
This means that:
- the maximum enrolment for each six-week term is 30 credit points (normally two 15-credit-point subjects)
- the maximum enrolment for a 12-week semester is 60 credit points (normally four 15-credit-point subjects)
- if you are enrolled in a combination of semesters and terms, your maximum enrolment across a single semester teaching period should not be more than 60 credit points (or four 15-credit-point subjects)
- if your course study plan is exclusively term-based subjects, then you must ensure that you are enrolling into Term 2 and Term 3 for the first half of the year and Term 4 and Term 5 for the second half of the year
For example, if you enrol into 60 credit points in Semester 2, and 30 credit points for each of Term 4 and Term 5, that equals 120 credit points (eight standard subjects) in a study period where a standard full-time load is just 60 credit points (four standard subjects). This workload is too high and not achievable.
If you have enrolled in too many subjects, please log in to StudentOnLine and change your enrolment before the relevant census date to make sure you are only enrolled in 60 credit points (maximum four subjects) over the whole time during a standard semester.
