Commonwealth Higher Education Student Support Numbers (CHESSNs)

What is a Commonwealth Higher Education Student Support Number (CHESSN)? How do I find out my CHESSN?

If you're a current Commonwealth supported student and started your course before January 2021, you will have been given a Commonwealth Higher Education Student Support Number (CHESSN).

Your CHESSN helps the Australian Government and other providers keep track of any Commonwealth assistance scholarships or HELP loans you have accessed. Your CHESSN also lets you view the details of your Commonwealth assisted study, including any debts, via the myHELPbalance site.

You can find your CHESSN on your Commonwealth Assistance Notice (CAN), which is emailed to your student email about three weeks after census date.

Important information if you are due to graduate in 2023 or later:

Due to changes in the way the government is managing student loans from January 2021, if you are due to graduate in 2023 or later, you'll need to obtain a Unique Student Identifier (USI) and notify us of this number before you can graduate. Your USI will then replace your CHESSN.
