What is a 'Commonwealth Assistance Notice' (CAN)? How do I get my CAN from a previous year?

A Commonwealth Assistance Notice (CAN) is a record about your student debt that has been reported to the Australian Tax Office (ATO). A CAN is issued for every teaching period in which you are enrolled. The CAN includes:

  • information about your enrolment
  • any HELP debt you have and
  • payments you have made.

We email your CAN to your La Trobe email three weeks after census date. Check that all the information on the CAN is correct. If there is anything wrong with the CAN you have 14 days to submit an enquiry to ASK La Trobe.

Note: The CAN is not a bill. You do not pay any fees when you receive your CAN.

If you are a current student, you can view your previous CANs by logging into StudentOnLine, navigating to the 'My Details tile', then selecting 'Communication' on the left-hand side of the screen.

If you no longer have access to StudentOnLine contact ASK La Trobe.
