How much time will I study on campus (contact hours)? How much study should I do outside of class?

The time you spend in classes, known as 'contact hours', will depend on:

  • the number of subjects you are studying
  • the type of classes in your subject.

There are different types of classes - lectures, tutorials, seminars, lab or practical classes.

La Trobe recommends you study ten hours per week for each subject. This includes the time spent in class.

Graduate research candidates
In order to maximise your chances of completing your degree within the expected period of candidature, you should commit to an average of 35 hours per week if enrolled full-time and 17 hours per week if enrolled part-time. How much time you need to spend on campus will depend on the nature of your research and should be agreed with your principal supervisor.
