Hurdles and additional assessments

What is a 'hurdle requirement' and what is the difference between SAHA and SAHE, or SPA and SPE grades?

Some subjects have a 'hurdle' - an assessment task that must be passed in order to pass the whole subject. You can check if there are any hurdles in your subjects by looking them up in the University Handbook.

During the results period, you might get one of the following grades:

Grade Code for Hurdle Assessments

Grade Code for Non-Hurdle Assessments

SAHA

SPA

SAHE

SPE

If you get an SAHA or SAHE grade, it means that you have not passed the hurdle requirement for the subject, but you will have a chance to complete an additional assessment task to earn a pass.

  • SAHA - you will be given an extra assessment task. You will be emailed the details of the task, with a due date for submitting it.
  • SAHE - you will be given a centrally managed exam. The exams are run during the supplementary/special exams period.

If you pass the SAHA/SAHE task you will pass the subject. There is no mark adjustment for an SAHA/SAHE task. If you fail the task you will receive an ungraded fail (F).

For further info go to 'Assessment Procedure - supplementary assessment for hurdle requirements' in the Policy Library.

If you get an SPA or SPE grade, it means that you have not passed an assessment task, e.g. an exam. Both of these codes are granted by a subject examiner/coordinator, or are awarded as a result of a Special Consideration application.

  • SPA - you will be given an alternative assessment task. You will be emailed the details of the task and be given a due date for submitting it.
  • SPE - you will be given a centrally managed alternative exam. The exams are run during the supplementary/special exams period.
